Fishing and agriculture is the main livelihood of the community of the deep south and tourist are very welcome by the hospitality of the people of the south. This is a community that has been accustomed to welcoming foreign visitors for many centuries as the south coast has many small ports that were landing points for the sea farers of yesteryear who also made this island their home.

The south is a kaleidoscope of locals and visitors who arrived along the silk route of ancient times. Sri Lanka has been attracting many traders who found many trading opportunities with the island's treasures, which even today exist as local trade one will see when visiting the south.
