Perched on the banks of the serene Koggala Lake, !! is a luxurious three bedroomed holiday villa immersed in Sri Lanka’s southern rural life. Koggala was the home of Sri Lanka’s famous authors, Martin Wickramasinghe - whose books about life in Koggala and Madolduwa are still lovingly studied by school children island wide. Designed by Sri Lanka’s architecture guru, the late Geoffrey Bawa, !! sits amidst tranquil tropical gardens at the edge of Koggala Lake directly facing the Madolduwa island. !!consists of two separate pavilions – a sleeping pavilion and the other with stylish living and dining areas. !! follows an open plan with large living spaces, high roofs, white cemented floors, and verandas that lets you take in the surrounding tropical oasis. Interiors are furnished with antiques and tastefully infused with vibrant colours. |

AccommodationAccommodation !! has 3 double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms. The exquisite master bedroom suite occupies the entire upper floor of the sleeping pavilion with a private balcony overlooking Koggala Lake. One of the enclosed living areas within the second pavilion can also be transformed into a fourth bedroom with two additional beds, if required. All the rooms are beautifully laid out with antiques including large king size beds, couches and planter’s chairs. Mandalay can comfortably accommodate up to 8 guests.
FacilitiesFacilities A 25 metre swimming pool sits on a front lawn that slopes down to the lake. Meals are served where ever you wish – at the dining table by the side of the swimming pool, on the pontoon overlooking the lake or in the privacy of your own balcony. Sri Lankan rice and curries and western dishes are prepared by the in-house cook with fresh vegetables purchased at the village market. Fresh seafood is brought directly to the doorstep by the local fisherman. For those wishing to eat out, !! is just 10 minutes away from Unawatuna’s beach side restaurants and Galle Fort’s exquisite fine-dining restaurants.
ExcursionsExcursions Some of the more interesting islands on Koggala Lake include Fish Eagle Island where hundreds Eagles come to nest at dusk; Madolduwa – steeped in folklore, has remains of Martin Wickramasinghe original home; and Cinnamon Island where four village families do processing of cinnamon from into essential oils. Explore the village of Katholuwa and the simple rural lifestyle of these southern villagers. Stop by at the historic Giniwella temple and the ancient Kathaluwa temple known for its Buddhist murals, located only 50 metres away. Visit the Koggala Folk Museum that provides an insight into Sri Lankan Folk culture. Galle’s historic 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is just 15 minutes away. Hours can be spent exploring the maze of narrow streets lined with Dutch and British period buildings still in use, the sturdy ramparts looking out to sea, the growing collection of art galleries, antique shops, cafes and restaurants. Surfing and snorkelling is possible in Thalpe and Unawatuna just 10 minutes away as well as in Mirissa further ahead.
