Lunuganga’s beautiful house and 25-acre gardens were lovingly created over several decades by ‘the father of Asian architecture’ Geoffrey Bawa as his vision of a tropical garden idyll. Lunaganga is in Bentota, Sri Lanka. The view from the entrance terrace towards Cinnamon Hill and a distant temple comes as a complete surprise. It is as if, having been spun around in a game of blindman's buff, the blindfold has suddenly been removed to reveal the centre of a magic kingdom.

The estate sits astride two low hills on a promontory jutting into the Dedduwa Lake, a brackish lagoon fed by an estuary of the Bentota River. A mile away is the Indian Ocean. In 1948 there was nothing more here than an undistinguished bungalow surrounded by 25 acres of rubber trees, enjoying only limited views northwards across the Dedduwa Lake. The house itself has been turned inside out, but the original shell survives within a cocoon of new verandahs, courtyards and loggias.

Accommodation

Accommodation

Each of the four suites in the plantation house and the two studios in Cinnamon Hill are beautifully decorated in their own individual style to provide a very relaxing and memorable environment for guests. They are fan-cooled and all have modern en-suite bathrooms. Lunuganga can also be rented in its entirety and can accommodate a maximum of twelve people

The Glass Room
This room is edged on both sides by floor to ceiling glass windows that make it especially light and airy. Set above the entrance loggia it has wonderful views of the garden and over the years has been home to many artists in residence at Lunuganga. The room features a queen size four poster bed, planters’ chairs and a work desk.

Small House
This delightfully cluttered suite was converted from a shed that was once used to house farm animals into Bawa’s own private art gallery filled with sculpture, art and artefacts from all over the world. Today art still envelopes the walls including architectural blueprints of his most acclaimed work such as the Kandalama Hotel. A stairway from the downstairs sitting room leads dramatically up to the bedroom that features a king size antique four poster bed. The en-suite bathroom has a Victorian bathtub.

The Guest Room
The all-white Guest Room is located in the main house and is filled with plenty of paintings, antique Dutch furniture and interesting artefacts. It has a king size bed, en-suite bathroom with dual showers and private courtyard characterised by ochre coloured walls.

Cinnamon Hill (1 room)
This beautifully sited cottage at the edge of a cinnamon plantation has magnificent views over the Dedduwa Lake, the jungle and to a tiny white Buddhist stupa in the far-away distance. Set away from the main house, it affords guests staying here total privacy since there is plenty of indoor and outdoor living space and even a personal butler. Choose just one of the double rooms and enjoy the exclusivity of having the whole cottage to yourself.

Cinnamon Hill (2 rooms)
Occupy both of the double rooms at Cinnamon Hill and enjoy all of the exclusive benefits that come with it including total privacy, plenty of space and your own private butler. A perfect choice for families or couples.

Cuisine

Cuisine

At Lunuganga chefs offer contemporary gourmet cuisine using the freshest ingredients sourced from the markets each day. Cuisine is predominantly seafood with a strong Asian and Mediterranean influence – think grilled prawns with coconut or steamed ginger and shallot seer fillet - although the chefs are equally at home preparing some of the most delicious and innovative Sri Lankan curries, string hoppers and sambols.

While lunches are often two courses, dinners are a three-course combination that changes daily. Desserts such as lime and honey cheesecake or banana tarte tatin are especially indulgent. Equally as delicious are the cream teas that are served with freshly baked scones throughout the day in any beautiful spot of your choosing. Highly recommended!

Of course you can dine whenever and wherever you wish in any of the magical locations on the estate. You can even order a picnic lunch to be enjoyed from aboard a boat on the Dedduwa Lake. Delicious cocktails such as the Lunuganga Sour are sure to enhance your evenings and provide an aid to further thought and relaxation.

Location

Location

Lunuganga, a unique and intriguing country estate house, is a 15-minute drive inland from the beach resort of Bentota on the west coast of Sri Lanka. Set in rolling, Renaissance-inspired tropical gardens, Lunuganga is the former country residence of world-renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. The journey from Colombo’s International Airport will take approximately three hours.

Facilities:
The main house has living and dinging areas - personal space that was cherished by Geoffrey Bawa and is filled with his favourite pieces of art and antiques. This area opens out to panoramic views of the Dedduwa Lake. There are several outdoor areas scattered around the estate - overlooking the lake, jungles, ponds or paddy fields that is ideal for hours of inspired work or just relaxing. Lunuganga chefs take pride in their cuisine and are ever willing to serve meals where ever you wish – under a tree, in your own room, or even a picnic lunch to be enjoyed on a boat on the Lake. From contemporary gourmet cuisine with Asian and Mediterranean influences, to delicious Sri Lankan rice and curries are served using fresh ingredients purchased from the local market each day. The finest Sri Lankan teas with freshly baked scones are served throughout the day.

Excursions:
Although Lunuganga doesn’t have a swimming pool, the beautiful beaches of Bentota and Hikkaduwa are just a short drive away offering numerous water sports and safe swimming. There is a lake nearby which is perfect for picnics. The historic 17th century Galle Fort – a UNESCO World Heritage Site is a 1.5 hours drive away.
