Built in 2000 as a private villa, !! is now one of the chic brigade of boutique hotels, perched on top of a ridge and surrounded by a 12-acre tea estate. It is 15km from Galle, and is in the depths of the countryside, for that genuine Sri Lankan feeling. Here a member of staff, with a refreshing fruit drink and chilled hand towel, greets you, and the KK experience truly begins.

Walking along beside the saffron wall, you will see that the main area of the villa consists of three detached rooms running adjacent to the wall - first is The Peacock Suite and then the Living Pavilion. On each side of the huge airy Living Pavilion are Lily Ponds, over which you step to reach the Dining Pavilion.

Beyond the Dining Pavilion is the infinity edged pool, 20 meters in length and looking cool and inviting, with its dark green polished cement sides. Beside the pool is a recessed area, shaded by white bougainvillea, where breakfast or lunch may be taken.

Glimpsed beyond the Saffron Wall are Tamarind Suite and Mango Suite, whilst Tea and Garden Suites lay beyond the pool, surrounded by lush tropical greenery.

Although close to Galle, the atmosphere is utter peace and tranquility – a truly unique hotel among boutique hotels.

The Pea cock suite

Unadulterated luxury, what more could anyone wish for?

Sensational views of the verdant jungle where monkey sightings are almost assured (don't worry, they won't come any closer), crisp imported bed linens on the ebony four poster bed and plenty of fluffy towels in not one but two bathrooms, plus plenty of closet space and cushioned window seats for daydreams a deux.

When wide sweeping views over the Lake and the tea estate are not enough, take refuge in the private courtyard garden filled with aromatic gardenia bushes and frangipani trees. Both bathrooms boast sexy outdoor showers so the day's decision may simply be which one in which to disrobe?

Galle and the rest of world seem a million miles away, in this most special boutique hotel

The Tamarind Suite

Antique blue and white Chinese ceramics placed alongside a modern wrought iron four poster bed make for this airy suite a comfortable, uncluttered place to unwind. Crisp imported linens add European elegance to these tropical accommodations.

Relax on the private verandah, taking in nature's symphony as birds call from the overhanging trees.

Double basins as well as double showers in the en suite bathroom could mean double trouble. That's up to you.

The Mango suite

The carved wooden four-poster bed, draped with a mosquito net, grants you an unsurpassed view over the tea each and every morning.

This cosy room mixes contemporary Sri Lankan furniture with some of my favourite antique Oriental pieces, including the finest rice paper paintings.

The Bathroom has double hand basins, as well as double showers but if two feels like too many for one happy couple, feel free to share.

Overlooking the tea is this suite's extra wide verandah with deep antique Balinese bench, a sweet spot for listening to the jungle music that will soon surround you.

The Garden suite

Inside the estate's original building, with its lofty ceilings to keep rooms cool even when outside temperatures skyrocket, this expansive suite offers a stunning hand painted four poster double bed, antique furniture, as well as a plethora of sofas and chairs inside as well as on the shaded verandah.

The spacious bathroom has two hand basins, and my favourite outdoor shower, landscaped with ginger lilies and palms. Imagine yourself rinsing off in the Garden of Eden.

The Tea Suite

This sweet suite shares the original building so these rooms are always cool.

For kids of any age, two antique single four-poster beds feel very grown up, as does the seemingly endless bathroom with powerful shower. However these two beds can be put together for a couple wanting double the fun! Surrounding all that is yet another wide verandah, for play or pause.

We use only fruits, vegetables and herbs grown on the estate along with a selection of the freshest local produce to create simple, fusion dishes and classic Sri Lankan curries to pamper our guests' palates with good health. Both the two resident chefs have been trained in Thailand, and offer a mouth-watering range of Thai dishes, as well as western fusion specials.

As important as the food itself, mealtimes are entirely at your discretion. Breakfast and lunch are usually served at the poolside table while dinner moves to the Dining Pavilion but any other impromptu picnic spots on the property are yours for the asking.

Breakfast kicks off with a just picked exotic fruit and juices, local specialties such as string hoppers or Western egg dishes prepared as you like, and of course hot Sri Lankan tea or fresh brewed European coffee. Lunch is usually three courses, whilst dinner is a three-course gourmet affair. For a romantic dinner, may I suggest the staff set up a table in the garden for supper under the stars?

For those who are hell bent on losing weight, we offer a calorie counted series of menus, but we do not enforce this on everyone!

Important details

Important details

• Children under the age of 12 are not permitted at !!. The reason for this is twofold – firstly there are a number of steep drops from some of the terraces, and secondly, they pride themselves in being a truly special boutique hotel providing a haven of peace and tranquility – a scene not best suited for young persons!

• The sun shines year round on the villa. In general, the weather in Sri Lanka hovers usually around 80ºF. Days can feel very humid and nights remain comfortably warm. In the Galle district the days and nights do get even a little warmer just prior to the monsoon around the end of April.

• One of the great joys of villas's hilltop location is that there is nearly always a cooling breeze. All bedrooms are fully air conditioned, so for those rare hot nights, you can be assured of a good night's sleep.

• KK, rare for a boutique hotel, is a year round destination. The driest part of the year falls between December and April. The monsoon brings daily cloud bursts June/July and October/November but rarely is there a full day of rain. Thankfully, the country house ambience at villa means there's nothing better than curling up to read a good book, play backgammon or scrabble, all in indulgent comfort while the rain feeds the surrounding soil.

• Swimming, fitness, yoga and walks among the tea bushes are immediately outside your bedroom door at the villa. Minutes from the villa, activities abound from body surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, bike rides through the rice fields, culture tours, and jeep tours of animal reserves.

• Breakfast is included in the quoted price, but lunch and dinner will be charged separately. Lunch is 2,500 Rps and dinner is 3,250 rps, including taxes.

• Most guests come to Galle by private car as part of a broader exploration around Sri Lanka. The journey time is 4 hours from Colombo, 6 from Kandy.

• Since the room inventory is very small, therefore to guarantee a reservation we ask that you pay 30% at time of booking and the balance 30 days prior to arrival.
