Visit the ancient Mulgirigala Rock Temple perched on an enormous boulder more than 200m high. According to ancient inscriptions carved on the rock, Mulgirigala dates back almost 2,000 years when it was a site of a Buddhist monastery.
Nature lovers will enjoy the monkeys and numerous birds that can be seen from Kadju’s pool terrace including parrots, peacocks, fishing eagles, kingfishers, woodpeckers and humming birds. Sri Lanka’s famous wildlife parks are also situated nearby including Yala, Bundala and Kalamatiya bird sanctuary with its semi-saline lagoons and mangrove swamps that attract flocks of flamingoes. Visit Rekuwa, a small fishing village near Tangalle, where a fascinating Marine Turtle Conservation project is helping to save the endangered Marine Turtles that come to nest on the beach.
We also recommend a visit to the historic city of Galle and its 17th century Dutch Fort – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Much of the old Fort, a small walled city with about 300 homes and an old-world feel, still remain with its well preserved bastions, public buildings, churches, lighthouse and a maze of narrow streets.
