!! located within 'Rockwood Estate' in Hewaheta was one such bungalow once occupied by the early breed of 'Planters' who strived to make the high quality tea that Sri Lanka is renowned for. The Bungalow was constructed in the early 1900s and is situated approximately 4700 feet above sea level on top of a mountain overlooking the Randenigala Reservoir.
The local elders believe that !! was built between 1914 and 1924 for use by a British Planter in charge of the Eastland Division of Rookwood Estate.
Clay, Lime and Rock - The original bungalow consisted of walls built with rocks and bound by a mixture of clay and limestone dust.
Self Sustaining - There exists evidence of a Cattle-Shed supporting the notion that the early inhabitants of the bungalow had been self sustained with milk, meat, poultry and vegetables at their disposal on site. |
