Accommodation

Accommodation

Fort Printers has five strikingly stylish, highly polished rooms (one by the pool, four upstairs), each of which is adorned with silky drapery and slick furniture combining a wealth of Asian, European and Oriental styles. All rooms have a/c and elegant en suite bathrooms, equipped with good showers, sinks and toilets. A throwback to its original days as a day school, the Fort Printers suites are named History, Geography, Arts,

Villa

One enters the villa through a grand hallway with a view of the inner courtyard and the magnificent frangipani trees. The drawing room with high ceilings is well appointed with deep sofas and seating alcoves under ceiling-high original teakwood windows which open onto the gallery. The outside gallery is enclosed by door-high louvers which allow views of the bustling street whilst preserving the privacy of the villa within.

The drawing room evokes a feeling of minimalist grandeur and an ideal place to relax with a book during the day and hear the world pass by or have evening drinks in the soft copper lighting and appreciate the quiet of the dusk.

The library is opposite the drawing room and is elegantly furnished with comfortable custom-designed sofas and colorful cushions and contains a selection of books, magazines, DVD library and CDs and player.
The dining room comprises the whole length of the mansion and is an intimate setting for both lavish and informal dining. There is an informal sitting area to one end of the dining room for informal cocktails and snacks and after-meal naps. The dining room is furnished with a mix of hand-made oriental and contemporary furniture and accessories.

The meals are imaginatively prepared by two chefs and include traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry (which includes several vegetable dishes and at least one fish or meat curry) and fresh and vibrant Mediterranean inspired dishes. As yellow fin tuna is indigenous to the area, you can expect to find dishes with sashimi, grilled or seared tuna.
The dining room opens onto a courtyard which is a sanctum of peace and tranquility to sit or lounge around under the frangipani trees in the early morning or evening or to enjoy a swim in the cool, azure pool.

Suites

Four suites are located on the first floor. The History, Geography, Arts and the Headmaster’s suites all overlook the beautiful tiled roofs of the Fort houses, the harbor and the lighthouse.

The suites are entered via a magnificent gallery with polished jackwood floors and antique ceiling beams. The gallery is furnished in a minimal elegance with classic daybeds and is an ideal place to relax and hear the world go by. The fifth and most private suite, the Prefect’s, is located on the ground floor in the courtyard and overlooks the pool. All suites are air-conditioned and elegantly furnished with a mixture of classic and contemporary hand-made furniture and accessories

In recognition of its past as a college, the suites are named The Headmaster’s, The Prefect’s, History, Geography, and Arts.

History, Geography and Arts have high and airy ceilings, exposed original wood beams and polished wood floors. The suites look onto the tiled rooftops, Galle harbor and the light house and are flooded with light. Each suite is elegantly furnished with a large platform bed, an oversized chaise lounge, and a writing desk. Sumptuous red, saffron, blue, purple, orange, and magenta colors in silk and cotton drape the cushions and windows and give a secluded, sensuous feeling.

The bathroom behind the antique jackwood walls includes a separate toilet and shower. The copper shower room has a green glazed celadon tiled floor. The suites open onto a large gallery with polished wood floors and louvered windows overlooking Pedlar Street, furnished with colorful daybeds.

The Prefect’s suite is in the courtyard and overlooks the swimming pool. Highly private, the bedroom is furnished with large platform bed, an oversized chaise lounge and a writing desk. The spacious bathroom includes a separate shower room and an antique bathtub. The suite is a riot of colors and fabrics with velvet bedspread and silk window drapes. The pool is just outside the entrance for a cool dip.

The Headmaster’s suite overlooks the pool, the Galle harbor and the lighthouse. The bedroom is entered through the dressing room cum bathroom. The bathroom comprises a copper shower room with glazed celadon tiled floor and a toilet with views of the sea at the Church Street end.

The bedroom is on a raised platform and furnished with large platform bed, a chaise lounge and antique leather suitcases. To the end of the bedroom and overlooking the harbor is a magnificent sitting platform with oversized spreads and cushions. As the darkness descends on Galle Fort, one can sit there and marvel at the rotating white light emitting from the lighthouse and imagine the glorious past of the Fort and the mansion.

Cuisine

Cuisine

The Fort Printers offers a fresh and vibrant menu that uses predominantly fresh seafood and organic local produce. The chefs plan the menu for the day based on guests’ preferences, and lovingly create soups, mezzes, and mains comprising grilled fresh seafood, Mediterranean inspired specialties, and traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry (which includes several vegetable dishes and at least one fish or meat curry).

As seafood and particularly yellow fin tuna is abundant in the area, you can expect to find dishes with sashimi, grilled or seared tuna, lobster, prawns and several kinds of fish. The meals are served in the frangipani courtyard overlooking the thin lap pool or in the grand dining room and at times to suit the whims of the guests.

Breakfast usually includes fresh tropical fruits, fresh fruit juices, home cooked cereals, eggs, fresh curds and home made breads or any other special requests such as frittatas, hot cakes or Sri Lankan hoppers.

Lunch may include fresh salads, gourmet burgers, grilled tuna or open-faced sandwiches. Dinner is generally a lavish affair with specialties such as grilled lobster, seared tuna, prawns, slow roasted leg of goat or delicious Sri Lankan curries.

Location

Location

Fort Printers has an excellent location in the heart of Galle Fort, close to the sought-after historic hotels of Galle Fort Hotel and Amangalla. The scenic Galle coastline and many bars and restaurants is a short distance away. Galle is 120km south of Colombo and driving direct from the airport averages about four-and-a-quarter hours.

Activities

Activities

Galle Fort is incomparable to anywhere else in Sri Lanka. Entering through the 'new' English gate or the 'old' Dutch gate is akin to stepping into a different realm. Within, 600 houses, each with various degrees of renovation to their original Dutch architecture, crowd narrow, winding streets with individual, old-world charm. The thick, high ramparts that protect and distinguish the Fort are today used for romantic evening strolls, early morning power-walks and convenient viewpoints to catch enthusiastic ad-hoc cricket games as well as international matches held in the adjacent Galle cricket stadium. Fort Printers is centrally located in the Fort, close to a number of cafés, boutique shops and restaurants. Some of Sri Lanka's best sunbathing beaches are only a short trishaw ride away.
