ExcursionsExcursions Take a walk along the leafy byroads of Nuwara Eliya lined with tall pine trees and heritage mansions. For the more active there is tennis and snooker at the Hill Club, jogging around the Race Course, and, of course, golf at the century-old Nuwara Eliya Golf Club with its tight fairways and testing greens. For nature lovers, visit Victoria Park with its landscaped gardens and Himalayan migratory birds such as the Kashmir Flycatcher, Pied Thrush Indian Pitta and the Indian Blue Robin. Horton's Plains, an undulating 2000m high plateau 28km south of Nuwara Eliya, is also a popular day's excursion. The grassy plains, which are interspersed with small patches of forest, are home to leopards, sambur, deer, bear, monkeys and a rich array of birds, including some endemic species. A guided tour around a tea estate and factory is an enlightening experience where you can learn about the process of tea production before it reaches your cuppa. It also provides an opportunity to buy the best grades of up-country tea.
