:: Villa Mohotti, Bentota Sri Lanka ::
|
Set in lush coconut grove gardens bordering the beach, Villa Mohotti Walauwa dates back to 1880. Although it is indeed a hotel, the ranging layout, set amid the coconut trees, means that each of the 10 rooms is very private. The Dutch period manor house was originally used as part of a coconut estate. However, renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa carried out extensive refurbishments, and has made it into one of the most desirable hotels on the south coast. It is only metres from Galle Road yet feels a lifetime away- luxurious yet homely.
Great attention is given to privacy and personal service. The staff can arrange just about anything you could desire: local sightseeing trips, scuba diving or riverboat trips to mention but a few activities. However, you will most likely end up relaxing in the garden, on the beach or on one of the shady verandas in this home away from home.

AccommodationAccommodation The 10 large rooms are superbly designed. Simple, pared-down luxury is the overriding theme. Ours was floor to ceiling white, with only colonial planter’s furniture in between. High vaulted ceilings are wonderfully criss-crossed with exposed beams, which give the otherwise very safe and sturdy rooms an almost hut-like ambience.
The bedlinen is crisp; overhead mosquito nets will protect you at night; fans will keep you cool; there are mirrors in all the right places; and enough tables and chairs to make sure you never run out of places to sit. It's also one of the few Sri Lankan hotels we have visited which has a bath as well as shower, with hot and cold water, 24 hours a day.
Most of the superior rooms have balconies, as do all the suites which are larger and have better views. Family rooms with adjoining doors are also available.
ActivitiesActivities * Amble over the railway line to the shore and watch fishermen mending their nets
* Take pictures of the sunsets through the coconut trees
* Visit nearby Lunuganga, the country home of Sri Lanka's top architect Geoffrey Bawa (who designed parts of Villa Mohotti). It has won world acclaim as an outstanding piece of landscape architecture. Staff will arrange permission from the Trustees in Colombo. Or visit Brief Garden, a botanical extravaganza 10 kms away, created in 1929 by Bevis Bawa, Geoffrey's brother. Both are highly recommended.
* Visit the ancient Buddhist temples in nearby Bentota town or the colonial forts and museums at Galle and Matara (1-2 hours drive).
* Go scuba diving with local instructor Fred. Gear for hire. Day or overnight trips are possible.
* Take an all day boat cruise - lunch can be prepared by the Akasa kitchens
* Visit the nearby Turtle Hatchery (photo 4) where visitors are encouraged to release baby turtles back into the sea
* Further afield: Nature lovers can go hiking in the Horton Plains Nature Reserve and the Peak Wilderness, visit the tropical rainforest at Sinharaja, a paradise for bird and butterfly lovers, or drive to the Game reserves at Udawalawe and Yala.
* Relax on a planter’s chair with your feet hooked up on its extended arms in the garden or on one of the shady verandas – Bentota is after all a place for unwinding.
