This stunning 200-year-old Moorish mansion has been totally refurbished, offering twelve outlandish suites that push the concept of retro-chic into a new dimension. Offering spacious accommodation in a building that was once home to one of the wealthiest trading families on the island, you are bound to be completely taken aback by the painstaking workmanship typical of an era when time was spent on perfection and space was an affordable luxury.
The proprietor, Lalin Jinasena, is a Colombo native who has turned the hotel into something spectacular with every inch of space containing innovative furniture, textures and lighting, giving a heady tropical chic ambiance blended with colonial elegance. The end result is a contemporary "retro chic" boutique hotel that prides itself on a highly personalized service. The idea here is for guests to make Casa Colombo their home away from home.
The original components of this heritage property - intricate mosaic floors, molded ceilings, elaborate columns and arches, ornate balconies and window awnings - have all been retained and blended successfully with vibrant colours, neon lighting, contemporary furniture using elements of cement hard wood, brushed steel, and copper, black and white photography, and the latest in HiFi and WiFi cutting-edge technology.
There are just twelve suites in Casa Colombo, each individually decorated with furniture designed by the proprietor and custom-made locally. Each suite is very spacious, and features plasma screens, fully loaded iPods, Nakamichi sound systems, WiFi and Apple Mac laptops. When you get unpacked, the impressive pink pool awaits with glass sunbeds with selectors for choosing the music and two chrome elephants wading in the shallow pool.
Other feasts for the senses include the spa services, all conducted in the suite. Apart from the restaurants, you also have trendy lounge bars for chilling out, and most importantly, sipping original cocktails. Sri Lanka being the home of tea, there's a tea room located on the lawn facing the hotel façade which also features a menu of light snacks. Add to this two trendy restaurants featuring Italian cuisine and Spanish tapas and the headline-grabbing pink pool and you have the perfect designer escape in paradise. |
