A totally unique 5 room Palladio style house built in 1920 on the only privately owned island in Sri Lanka, in a sheltered bay, paddling distance from the coast with sweeping views of the bay and fishing village. The Island comprises 2 ½ acres of sheer tropical fantasy with nothing between it and the South Pole.
Even by the rarefied standards of Sri Lankan escapes, Taprobane Island is something special. To even call it a hotel is stretching the definition a bit; it’s really just a single five-bedroom house, occupying its own private island, a little two-acre crag, grown thick with tropical trees, a short wade through shallow water from the southern tip of the Sri Lankan mainland.
Taprobane Island was established in the 1920s by a French pseudo-aristocrat, and later inhabited by Paul Bowles, one literary figure whose tastes you can trust (an itinerary built around places where Paul Bowles used to live would be quite a trip). There’ll be little to distract you from writing your own novel, or whatever it is you decide to get up to — the house rents as a single unit, so all the guests are your own, and five dedicated staffers are on hand to see to your every need. Not to mention that a private island is pretty much the definition of exclusive.
There’s not room for much in the way of luxe-hotel amenities, aside from an infinity pool — but if you’re tired of secluded mansions on private islands, you’re tired of life. And you won’t be in any mood to complain after the spectacular arrival; on foot, at low tide, or in deeper water, on the back of an elephant. |
