A pleasant small hotel situated on a small headland right at the end of Unawatuna beach. Sun n Sea is uniquely located at the east-end of Unawatuna Bay, proudly perched atop a rocky outcrop where the world famous sandy beach begins.
The crescent shaped beach abutting Sun N Sea on one end and a Temple atop a rock at the west end, gives Unawatuna Bay every right to be listed as one of the most beautiful bays in the world.
The experience of a “Sun N Sea” sunset is breathtaking and never ceases to amaze anyone who has been privileged to witness it. The restaurant is perfectly positioned to ensure the most amazing views across the bay from dawn to dusk. Step right out onto the beach and you can walk around the bay to the "main" strip of beach bars/restaurants where a good choice of food, cold Lion beer and night life is available.
The seafront by the hotel is rocky and shallow forming small pools for safe dipping even when the rest of the bay can be rough and it opens on to a wide sandy beach, which in turn is the pool at "Sun N Sea". |

AccommodationAccommodation
Things To DoThings To Do Unawatuna thankfully unspoilt by skyscrapers or sprawling resorts has a mix of private guest houses and hotels, cafes and restaurants providing a variety of accommodation and food and nightlife. The village boasts a hotch potch of things to do, see and buy. Cookery lessons in Sri Lanka cuisine, snorkelling, wind surfing, diving or just relaxing come to mind. The little shops in the village sell anything from handicrafts to gems and jewellery to made to measure clothes. Ayurvedic treatment and massages along with Yoga classes are quite a popular option too.
Galle's historic 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is just 15 minutes north of Unawatuna. The maze of narrow streets lined with Dutch and British period buildings are still in use as residences and hotels. The vast ramparts guarding the little city inside the Fort are a testament to engineering of the Colonial period.
Rumassala Temple with beautiful views stretching out over the Indian Ocean is located high on the headland of Unawatuna Bay. Rumassala Hill is famed for the natural medicinal herbs and mentioned in the Ramayana epic as being a piece of Mount Everest dropped here by Hanuman.
There are many other sights of beauty and historic and other interests that can be visited as day excursions, including, Whale watching, Tea plantations, Turtle Hatcheries and the UNESCO World Heritage reserve, Sinharaja Rain Forest to name a few.
Food & DiningFood & Dining The location of the restaurant, with a panoramic view of the bay together with the sound of the waves breaking gently, and the breathtaking sunsets, makes our restaurant popular with guests at any time of the day, be it breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a cup of tea.
Serving rice and curry alongside international dishes, we pride ourselves in the quality and freshness of our meals. All our meals are cooked to order and we strive to accommodate any special dietary requirements our guests may have.
The rice and curry is very popular with guests and unsurprisingly so are the Jumbo Prawns and Lobster. The food has been cited in popular travel guides as ‘the best in the bay’ with the Sun N Sea Rice and Curry leading the menu.
Special MentionSpecial Mention Legacy of Muharam Perera Muharam Perera, a lady of unique personality and character built up Sun N Sea to what it is today, as only she could. Her determination and drive, has seen this uniquely located property grow from four bedrooms to a very popular ten bedroom property boasting a well acclaimed restaurant.
For those who know of Muharam Perera it would not be a surprise to read that she personally transported all the building materials for the first four rooms in her car – a Mini Estate (Station Wagon to some). In the late’70s, early ‘80s it was a familiar sight to see her car filled with bricks or even rafters making its way from Galle to Unawatuna
The 2004 tsunami devastated the four ground floor rooms that were the origin of Sun N Sea, but left the upper floor rooms and the kitchen intact. Thankfully there were no casualties among guests or staff at Sun N Sea. The remnants of the garage door that Muharam clung on to for survival from the devastating wave, is mounted in the lobby as a monument to her strength of character and love for Sun N Sea.
Her inherent determination would not allow even nature to destroy what she had lovingly created. By the middle of 2005 the ground floor rooms and restaurant and bar were rebuilt and she welcomed guests back into this warm and friendly place with utmost pride.
Sadly Muharam Perera passed away in April 2006 leaving her pride and joy to her four children. Her legacy still lives on with the same warmth determination and pride that she instilled in her staff.
