Hangwella is the entrance to the Seethawaka Kingdom. Todays Hangwells Rest House is the grounds of the old Kings Fortress. Later this site fell into the hands of the Portuguese, Dutch and the British and held their fortresses. Over a long period of neglect these fortress are not standing today. The execution of Disawe Lewke by the king also took place in the vicinity of Hangwella.
An ancient elephant trap, located between two natural rock formations can be seen in Hanwella. This is one of few such existing natural elephant trapping sites preserved today.
