About 5km (3 miles) east of Matara is Dondra Head, Sri Lanka's southernmost extremity, where the classic white-painted lighthouse was built by the British in 1889. It is 250 steps to the top, but the view makes every step worthwhile. Looking southwards into the deep blue of the Indian Ocean, the next encounter of land is Antarctica and fine views of the coast to either side.
South of Dondra in Sri Lanka may turn out to be the best location in the world for seeing blue whales. Furthermore, it may also be the best for seeing both blue whales and sperm whales together.
