Bird sanctuary at Weerawila which is 8km from Hambanthota is located around an reservoir. Aquatic birds like herons, kingfishers, pellicans and painted stork such as orioles and hornbills can be seen. This dry zone Sanctuary comprises of three lakes, namely Weerawila, Debara Wewa and Pannagamuwa Wewa. Yodha Wewa and Tissa Wewa are another two lakes within this sanctuary. All these lakes act as ideal habitats for shorebirds. Egrets, Cormorants, Asian Openbill (Anastomus oscitans), White Ibis (Eudocimus albus), Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia) and many migrant birds are seen here. The Wirawila Bird Sanctuary is a place to be visited by wildlife specialists and ornithologists.
