Weligama literally means `Sandy Village'. The name is given because of its sandy sweep bay. Situated in Matara district at a distance of 143 km from Colombo, Weligama is a quiet fishing town, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. One can also see the famous stilt fishermen in Weligama.
Close to the shore there is an islet known as Taprobane, purchased in the 1920s by the eccentric French Count de Maunay. This is the only privately owned island in the country. Just 100 metres offshore lies this unbelievably romantic mansion known as Taprobane, built around a courtyard, all wide shady verandahs and terraces, with a swimming pool. The entire island ? house, staff, stunning sunsets and all ? can be rented.
