Further East still you will arrive at Tangalle on the South corner which is less commercial but the home to many private and exclusive villas like Mahawella, the last house and the Claughton House.
Shortly before you reach Tangalle, a spot of excitement awaits at Kudawella, where the pounding sea gushes under a rocky cliff and is forced up through a hole to form a dramatic water spout.
Hundred of visitors climb up the rocky path ? pausing to sample the crisp fried fish offered by fishermen's wives, or to buy a bag of sliced mango with a sprinkle of salt and chilli powder ? to watch the blow hole.
Many people claim that the beaches around Tangalle (also known as Tangalla) have the softest sand and the safest sea along the entire south coast.
Tangalle seems set to become the most exclusive of the beaches along the south coast, and offers a chance to scuba dive around the coral reef protecting its four kilometres of sandy beach, and to explore a couple of wrecks. You could also watch nesting marine turtles drag themselves ashore at night to lay their eggs at Rekwalla.
