Continuing the journey south, around 120 kilometres from Colombo, visitors can travel back in time in Galle Fort, an atmospheric little town set on a peninsula and completely surrounded by ramparts and stone walls. Built by the Dutch in the 17th century on the site of previous Portuguese fortifications, the town has wonderful old houses (dating from the Dutch and later the British colonial periods), warehouses, administrative buildings, small shops, jewellers, mosques and churches. With the recent opening of a couple of fine boutique hotels and a few specialty shops, Galle Fort is more enticing than ever for visitors.
Just outside the entrance to Galle is the Light House Hotel set right on the rocky beach. Just 5 km ast Galle is the great beach of Unawatuna.
