Ritigala is situated in Sri Lanka's North Central Province, 27 miles from the city of Anuradhapura. The Ritigala mountain range comprises of 6 mountain peaks - Ritigala Kanda, Andiyakanda-Hinna, Deviyange Kanda, Maha Kanda, Seethala Kanda and Kuda Arabeddha Hinna.
A visit to Ritigala can be made on the Maradankadawala - Habarana road, turning left at the Galapitagala junction and the wewa and proceeding 3 miles on the gravel road to the Archaeological Office. There are many legends associated with Ritigala, the oldest and best-known concerns the Indian epic poem, the Ramayana, which was written some 3,000 years ago. Ritigala was depicted as the mountain used by Monkey God Hanuman to jump from Sri Lanka to Rameswaram in India to bring "Sanjeewa Plant (Sansevi) and was used again in being a part of the mountain. It is believed that a part of mountain brought to Sri Lanka was dropped here and Sanjeewa plants are found at Ritigala.
