The ancient Citadel of Panduwasnuwara is located in the Kurunegala District along the Kuliyapitiya Hettipola highway a few kilo meters from Kuliyapitiya. Panduwasnuwara, a place of historical importance is considered to be the oldest Sinhala Kingdom in the country, dating back 2500 years. It teems with edifices, palaces, ramparts, dagobas, viharas and temples depicting the nation's pride and prosperity for over 2500 years. Even though one of the primary features of the site is the restored Temple of the Tooth with a Bo tree, the highlight is the round shaped palace, which is believed to have had several storeys during its heyday and is still a sight to behold. The Temple of the Tooth here is one of the oldest edifices in the area which sheltered Lord Buddha's tooth relic for many years. It is said that the sacred tooth relic which was brought back to Sri Lanka from the South Indian invaders by King Parakramabahu was housed here. Thus though a short lived Capital of Sri Lanka, Panduwasnuwara is an area worth exploring.
