Namal Uyana, bearing South East Asia's largest Rose Pink Quartz mountain range steeped in rich legend, is situated about 159 km north of Colombo in the sleepy hemlet of Ulpathgama, Galkiriyagama, in the Anuradhapura district. According to folklore, Moghul Emperor Shah Jehan had used pink quartz mined from this unique range, to build the world famous monument Taj Mahal. Today, this proud national heritage with ruins of an ancient vihara and rock enclaves has been declared an archaeological reserve, with the tireless efforts of Ven. Vanavasi Rahul Thero who made it his abode for meditation. Namal Uyana boasts of a countless number of Na trees as well as other valuable trees like Ebony, Teak, Satinwood, Margosa, Milla and Panakka. The long and arduous trek to the rose quarts range winds through a shady landscape of green that looks ethereal during the flowering season. The formation of Na trees points to the fact that it had truly been a park in ancient times.
