1863. Active; focal plane 31 m (102 ft); three flashes every 15 s, white or red depending on direction. 21 m (69 ft) round cylindrical masonry tower with lantern and gallery. Entire lighthouse painted white. Trincomalee, on Sri Lanka's northeastern coast, has a magnificent protected harbor, the finest in the Indian Ocean; for decades it was a major Royal Navy base. The lighthouse is located atop a small island in the bay; one of the white sectors marks the proper line of entrance to the harbor. Accessible only by boat. Site and tower closed.
