Besides, rubies and shapphires, the gem soil also bears cat’s eyes, alexandrites, aquamarines, tourmalines, spinels, topaz, garnets, amethyst, zircons and variety of other stones. Sri Lanka, the island known as the pearl of the Indian Ocean lives up to its nickname as a hotbed for a variety of gems. Sri Lanka is home to 40 varieties of Gems out of 85 varieties available in the whole world. Gems of Sri Lanka have found there way to many a royal court around the world since ancient history.

The National Gem and Jewellery Authority has been setup to encourage Jewellery producers to maintain standards in accordance with ISO (The International Organization for Standardization - the world's largest developer and publisher of International Standards).
According to National Gem and Jewellery Authority Act no 50 of 1993 all the producers engaged in the field of Jewellery should register themselves under this Authority. According to the Special Gazette notification No 1436/21 of 17th March, 2006 issued by the Government, quality of the products made of Gold, Silver and Platinum should be certified by the Authority as it is to the expectation of ISO and place it’s seal also, it should be under the control of it.
Analysis is carried out by the laboratories of National Gem and Jewellery Authority, providing buyers with the opportunity to ascertain if the articles purchased are genuine and to ISO expectation. |
